Book Review: Laird of Darkness (Nicole North)

Synopsis:

Half-Fae Laird Duncan MacDougall is cursed. His nights are haunted by Otherworld creatures sent to kill him. The only way to stop them is to possess the magic bow currently in the hands of his enemy half brother, Kinnon MacClaren. In desperation, Duncan plans to take MacClaren's bride-to-be hostage and exchange her for the bow.

Lady Alana Forbes has never met her intended, but she hopes he is handsome—and a good lover, for Alana is no innocent virgin. On her way to Castle Claren, Alana and her escorts are intercepted, and she is kidnapped by a man with extraordinary abilities—and every attribute she longs for in a mate.

Duncan didn't expect the woman he thought of as a mere pawn to be so beautiful, and so arousing. Alana is drawn to him as well—but Duncan still needs the bow, and Alana is betrothed to another. How far will Alana go to save the life of the man she's come to love?

Review:

This was the first Highlander book I have ever read (I know, gasp, right!) and it did not disappoint. I had a little difficulty getting around the language of the book at first, but once I got used to it, the story flowed smoothly.

My first impression was that I did not like either of the characters. It could have been the time in which the story was set (historical is generally not appealing to me) but they came off as cold, snotty and irritating, especially Alana. But as I kept reading, I found that under all that propriety was a real woman with real desires. All she is looking for is the same thing every woman is looking for. Love, companionship and passion. Ok, great sex, too. ;) But Alana isn't just a damsel in distress with a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome. She's no pushover and she has talents that will be useful to Duncan, which she uses as a bargaining tool.

Duncan starts off as a hero, rescuing Alana from certain death, but quickly becomes the captor once he realizes who she is. Despite his plan to trade her for the bow that he so desperately needs, he soon discovers that he's not so keen on the idea of handing her over and the resulting passion is sizzling hot! However, after a deal is made with Alana, he stays true to his word and lets her go. It's this honorable gesture, along with the smoking hot romance, that makes me love Duncan.

The story was fast paced, intense, sweet at times and certainly a page turner!

Rating:

I have to say that I really enjoyed reading my first Highlander book. It was fun, exciting and sexy. I will definitely be picking up another book in this genre and I will certainly be reading more books by Nicole North!

Heat Factor:

Steaming up the windows!

The passion in this story was intense!  Sparks fly between Duncan and Alana and there's no shortage of steamy scenes.  If you like your men strong and dominant, this one is for you!

A copy of Laird of Darkness was provided to me for review by the publisher and netgalley.com.
