Writing Romance: Michele Hauf (Interview & Giveaway)

Secrets of a Book Lover

Welcome to Tuesday's edition of Writing Romance! Due to our special feature this week, Sexy Snippets is on hold but will return with a vengeance next week. I promise!

I am so excited to be hosting an interview and giveaway with Michele Hauf! Michele is the author of several paranormal romance series' and has just recently released Forever Vampire, which I reviewed here. Please help me welcome Michele!

Hi Michele! Thank you so much for joining me on Secrets of a Book Lover!

Your first book was Dark Rapture which was published in 1997. How did the ideas for this story come to you and what made you decide to put it into a book and have it published? In other words, how did you go from a person with an idea to a published author?

*I've always had stories in my brain. Elaborate things that play out over weeks as I daydream or fall to sleep. So this vampire started rattling around in my brain, and, at the time I started writing Dark Rapture, I was on maternity leave so I needed something to do while the baby was sleeping. I started putting on paper the story, and I haven't stopped since.

Since then you have written over 40 books and have over a dozen works in progress. How do you keep all of your ideas separate or do they all just blend together?

*I keep files on each story. But writing in my Beautiful Creatures world is great because characters can cross over from book to book, and I'm familiar with the world, so that makes things a little easier. Switching from that world to another, like the Rogue Angel world, is a little tougher, but it keeps my writing muscles flexed. :-)

With so many books, there are even more characters that you have written into the stories. Do you know who the characters will be and what their personalities are before you write them or do they write themselves as the book progresses?

*Both. Sometimes I have a character who has appeared in a previous book, or he's appeared in my brain, and I've taken notes on him/her for later. Sometimes I come up with someone totally new who does really blossom and become fully developed during the process of writing the entire book.

What is the biggest challenge you face as an author?
< *Discipline. Putting my butt in the chair every day and typing for hours when the sun is shining outside and I just want to wander in the yard. If you had one piece of advice to give to an aspiring writer, what would it be?

*Write. Write some more. And then write some more.

Thank you so much for joining us and giving us some insight into your writing!

  7. Oh, I love so many, but if I had to pick one (or two) I would go with the ones that introduced me to romance - kathleen Woodiweiss and Laurie McBain. I still have their books on my bookshelf.

  8. I love many, but my absolute favorite is JR Ward. I will never tire of her BDB series.

  9. Karen Marie Moning. Her Highlander series is romance, but her newer fever series is just so much more than just romance. Love your questions! Thanks for a chance to win!

  10. So many to choose from..hmm... My favorite would probably have to be J.R. Ward.

  11. This comment has been removed by the author.

  12. Sarah Dessen. Her characters are so realistic and relatable. And the winning factor? The love interests are always hot!!

  13. My favorite author is Jane Austen. My favorite author writing today is Kresley Cole.

  14. I so can't choose a favorite! I'll say Nora Roberts since I've been reading her stuff since '91

  15. Hmmm... that's a toughie. I think I'm going to say Gena Showalter. I kind of love how she's hit and miss for me, that I don't always love each of her romances (or books at all) but she writes a great variety and they're always fresh and fun. :)

  16. I love so many Romance Authors that it's very hard to choose just one since they all have their own style. But I'll say Karen Marie Moning and Monica McCarty since their Highlanders are awesome and Delicious. :)
